Our Vision: Nature's Rhythm

At Petalby, sustainability isn't a department. It's the reason we exist.

Every jar we make begins with a simple refusal: to rush what nature intends to take its time. That refusal is the whole of our environmental philosophy, long before it ever needed a name. We call it Nature's Rhythm — the idea that the earth already has a pace, a season, a way of giving generously without being emptied, and that our only responsibility is to move at that pace rather than override it.

Slow Craft, Small Batch

We make in small batches, by hand, because that is the only way to make without waste. There is no factory line here producing more than anyone asked for, no warehouse of unsold stock destined for landfill. What we make, we make because someone will use it — and what's left of the process (spent botanicals, offcuts, trimmings) is composted back into the gardens we grow from. Slow craft isn't a marketing phrase for us. It's simply what happens when you refuse to industrialise something that was never meant to be industrial.

Untouched Ecosystems

The wild places our botanicals come from — hedgerows, meadows, coastal gardens — are not ours. We borrow from them, carefully, and we borrow less than they can give. Our foragers and growers are trained to harvest with restraint: never stripping a hedgerow bare, always leaving enough for the bees, the birds, and the plant's own next season. We work with a small number of trusted, ethically-run smallholdings and wild-harvest partners rather than large agricultural suppliers, precisely so we can vouch, personally, for how every ingredient was taken from the ground.

Packaging With Nothing to Hide

Our jars are glass. Our tins are metal. Where we use paper, it's uncoated and compostable. Where we can avoid packaging altogether, we do. We chose materials that either return to the earth or can be refilled and reused indefinitely — not because it looks good on a label, but because "none of the modern mess" has to include the box it arrives in, or the promise means nothing.

What We're Still Working On

We won't pretend this is finished. Sustainability is not a badge you earn once; it's a rhythm you keep returning to. We're currently working to expand our refill programme, reduce transit packaging further, and formalise long-term partnerships with the smallholdings we already work with informally. We'll update this page as that work matures — because a promise you can't revisit honestly isn't a promise at all.
