What’s Coming: Pets, Crafts, Garden, Play and Tech

Five ranges beyond Petalby Spa have pages, names and rules. None of them has stock yet. Rather than leave five quiet doors in the navigation with no explanation, here is what is behind each one and roughly when we expect to open it.

Where things stand, plainly

Petalby Spa — skincare, bath, aromatherapy, soap flowers, candles and wheat bags — is the range we stock today, alongside the mystery Curated Collections and the fixed Spa Edit sets. Pets, Crafts, Garden, Play and Tech are built and empty.

We could have hidden them until launch day. We have left them visible because we would rather be a young brand that says so than one that pretends to be bigger than it is. If you land on one of those pages and find nothing to buy, that is not a fault; it is the honest state of things.

We are opening them one at a time, in order, with stock behind each before it goes live. The expected sequence is Pets, then Crafts, then Garden in time for spring, then Play. Tech follows when we are confident we can meet the standard we have set for it. Those are intentions rather than dates, and we would rather move a date than launch a range half-stocked.

Petalby Pets

What it will hold: accessories, toys and bedding. Quilted beds and blankets, collars and leads, tightly made toys that survive more than a week, bowls and feeding things worth leaving out on a kitchen floor.

What it will not hold: anything a pet eats. Treats, food and supplements sit behind registration requirements we have not met and would not shortcut, so they are not in the first release and may never be.

Why it is first: it is the range where the gap between the ordinary version and the good version is widest. Most pet accessories are made to a price and look it. There is a lot of room to choose better, and pets are one of the few subjects on which people are happy to receive a gift chosen for someone else in the household entirely.

Petalby Crafts

What it will hold: craft kits, haberdashery, and making-and-mending gifts. Beginner kits with everything in the box, yarn and thread worth working with, tools that improve the job rather than complicate it.

What we are being careful about: kits are the easiest thing in gifting to get wrong. A kit with poor materials produces a frustrating evening and a half-finished object in a drawer, which is worse than no gift. So the test is whether a beginner could finish the thing in the time the box implies, with the contents provided. Anything that needs a trip to another shop halfway through does not go in. Kits aimed at children follow the same child-safety rules as Play.

Petalby Garden

What it will hold: tools, planters, gloves and accessories. Things that live in a shed and get better with use — a trowel with a handle that has been shaped rather than sawn, a kneeling pad, twine and dibbers and the small unglamorous items that make an hour outside easier.

What it will not hold, at least at first: live plants and seeds. Both raise questions about handling, timing and plant health that we would want properly answered before we start posting them.

Why spring: garden gifting has a season and pretending otherwise wastes everyone’s time. A trowel in November is a fine gift and a poor listing.

Petalby Play

What it will hold: toys, games and puzzles. Wooden things, jigsaws, games for a kitchen table on a wet Saturday. The bias will be towards things without batteries and without a screen, not out of principle but because they age better.

The rules we have set: UK-market stock only, with UKCA marking and age labelling intact, never from overseas dropship feeds. Nothing intended for the under-threes without a specific decision to stock it. Toy safety is the one area where a curator’s judgement is not enough on its own, and the paperwork behind an item matters as much as how it looks.

Petalby Tech

What it will hold: design-led desk objects, gadget gifts and playful electronics for adults and teenagers. Think a phone stand cut from one piece of oak, or a felt roll that turns a bag full of cables into something findable.

What it is not: serious kit. No headphones, no phones, no audio gear — that is a different business with a different sort of customer. It is also not a children’s range; anything designed for under-fourteens belongs in Play.

Why it is last: the standard is hardest to hold here. Electrical and battery items have to be UK-market stock, correctly marked, from named brands or design houses rather than unbranded imports. Coin-cell batteries carry child-safety packaging duties. Selling electricals in the UK brings recycling take-back obligations that we intend to set up properly before the first item lists, not after. And the brand test is strictest of all: joke-shop electronics fail regardless of margin.

The rules that apply to all of them

Nothing changes range to range. Every item still has to earn its place. Anything applied to skin still comes only from UK wholesale and UK makers whose products are already on the GB market. Nothing ingestible goes on the site — for people or for pets. No product is described with a medicinal or therapeutic claim, anywhere, ever. Every description is written by us in our own words rather than lifted from a supplier.

The other constant is the value rule. Any mystery composition, whatever range it draws from, has to hold contents worth at least forty per cent more than the price. Adding ranges gives us more to choose between; it does not give us more room to pad a box.

Meanwhile, Petalby Spa, the Spa Edit sets and the Curated Collections are stocked and shipping, and every gift box still travels free within the UK.
