What is inside a Bud

One thing, full size, chosen properly. Not four small things chosen quickly.

A Bud holds a single piece drawn from one of our three categories — naturally derived skincare and cosmetics, restorative bath and body, or the occasional considered object. Which category, and which piece, is the part you do not know until the vessel is opened.

That is a deliberate constraint rather than a budget one. At £22 the honest choice is between one good thing and several forgettable ones, and a gift made of miniatures reads as a gift made of miniatures. So the Bud is one full-size piece from a named maker or an established British supplier, in the ivory vessel, packed by hand.

The arithmetic on a £22 box

Every Petalby mystery gift box has to hold retail value of at least 1.4 times its price. On a Bud that is £30.80, and in practice a little more. It is checked against what the piece actually sells for before the box is packed, not estimated afterwards and not averaged across a season.

We can do that because much of what we compose with is surplus — excellent pieces over-produced by small British makers, or discontinued, relabelled or left behind by a season at an established supplier. The piece is unchanged; only its wholesale price has moved. How the rule works, in full.

Delivery is free on top of that, with no minimum. A £22 gift box that costs £22 to receive is rarer in this category than it should be.

When one piece is the right answer

The Bud suits the occasions where a larger gift would sit awkwardly — where you want to be thoughtful without making the recipient feel they owe you something back.

• Secret Santa and office gifting, where the budget is fixed and everyone can see what everyone spent.
• A thank-you — to a neighbour who took the parcels in, a teacher at the end of term, someone who did you a favour they did not have to.
• Someone you like but do not know well. A mystery gift box is unusually good at this: you are giving the surprise, not guessing their taste in front of them.
• Trying the format. If mystery gifting is new to you, £22 is a sensible way to find out whether you enjoy it before you spend more on it.

When to choose something larger

A Bud is one piece. If the occasion needs to feel like an occasion — a birthday, a milestone, a gift several people are putting into — it will look modest, and no amount of good curation changes that.

The Bloom at £42 holds three pieces composed to sit together and is the size most people settle on for a proper present. The Bouquet at £74 is the fullest, in a larger vessel, with one addition reserved for that size alone.
