What a Petalby mystery gift box actually is
You choose the size and the price. We choose the contents, from a pool we have already vetted. Nobody sees what is inside until the box is opened — including the person who bought it.
Every Petalby mystery gift box holds a composed selection drawn from three categories: naturally derived skincare and cosmetics, restorative bath and body pieces, and the occasional considered object. Those categories are fixed and published, which is the part that makes the surprise workable. The mystery is in which pieces arrive, not in whether they will be anything you would want.
The box itself is our signature ivory vessel, flower-themed and hand-packed. It is not full of flowers — the theme is the vessel, the contents are the edit.
We should be plain about the company we keep. The phrase “mystery box” has been worn thin by sellers shipping unsold stock by the kilo and calling the weight a gift. That is a different product wearing the same two words. A Petalby mystery gift box holds full-size pieces from named makers and established British suppliers, chosen because they sit well together, sent with a returns policy and a real address behind them.
How the 40% more actually works
Most of this category makes a value claim. Very few of them mean anything: “worth more than you paid” could be a penny, and a £50 box claiming £380 of contents is asking you to believe a multiple of more than seven.
Ours is a smaller number, and it is a rule rather than a claim. The retail value of the pieces going into a box must reach at least 1.4 times the price of the box. It is checked per composition, before packing, against what the pieces sell for — not averaged across a season, and not waived because a particular week was expensive. If a composition does not clear it, it does not get packed.
In pounds, that means:
- The Bud, £22 — contents worth at least £30.80. In practice a little over that.
- The Bloom, £42 — contents worth at least £58.80, and usually nearer £60.
- The Bouquet, £74 — contents worth at least £103.60, and usually nearer £105.
Free UK delivery sits on top of that, on every gift box, with no minimum. Most of the category gates free delivery somewhere between £40 and £75, which quietly takes a few pounds back out of the value at the till. We would rather the price you see is simply the price you pay.
Why we can do it
Because a large part of what we compose with is surplus, and surplus is cheaper than it is worth.
Small British makers over-produce. An established supplier discontinues a line, changes a label, or is left holding a scent that belonged to last spring. None of that makes the piece any less good — a body oil does not know it was made for a season that has passed — but it does change what it can be bought for. We buy those pieces, and we pass the difference on instead of keeping it. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the number can be a rule rather than a marketing line.
It has an honest consequence, which is the reason the box is a mystery in the first place: we cannot tell you in advance exactly what is inside, because we do not know what will be available on the day your order is composed. What we can fix is the standard, the categories, and the multiple. Those we publish.
One thing we will not claim: we do not make any of it. Petalby is a curator. Everything inside a box was made by somebody else and chosen by us — the choosing is the work, and the makers are the makers.
Which size suits whom
The Bud, £22. One piece, properly chosen. It suits the occasions where a large gift would be awkward — a Secret Santa, a thank-you, a teacher at the end of term, a colleague you like but do not know well. It is also the sensible way to try the format before spending more on it. More about The Bud.

What is never inside
A published list of exclusions tells you more about a mystery gift box than a published list of possibilities would. Ours:
- Nothing to eat or drink. No chocolate, no biscuits, no gin miniature. Almost every hamper in Britain is food; none of ours is.
- No sachets or samples counted as items. Pieces are full-size. Eight things sounds generous until six of them are sachets.
- No skincare, cosmetics or bath products sourced from overseas dropship feeds. Anything that touches skin comes from UK wholesale or makers whose products are already on the GB market.
- Nothing that makes a health claim. We describe how things smell and feel. We do not tell you what they will cure, because that is not a thing a gift box can honestly say.
- No filler. Nothing goes in unless it earns its place, and a box is allowed to hold fewer things rather than weaker ones.
If there is an allergy or an ingredient to avoid, say so in the checkout notes and we will compose around it. That is the one instruction we can take without spoiling the surprise.
The honest limits of mystery gifting
A mystery gift box is not the right gift for everyone, and it is worth knowing which sort of person you are buying for before you order.
- Some people do not enjoy the surprise. For someone who likes to choose their own things — a specific shade, a routine they have settled on — a mystery box is the least welcome format there is. For someone who enjoys the reveal, it is the most memorable thing at this price.
- You cannot request particular items. Allergies aside, the moment we take requests it stops being the thing you bought.
- Two boxes bought together will not match. Every box is composed by hand from what is available, so a pair ordered for two sisters will not be identical. Usually that is a feature. Occasionally it is not, and it is better said now than discovered later.
- You will not know what you are giving. If you need to describe the gift before it arrives — a corporate order with a specification, a gift you want to talk about in advance — the Spa Edit lists exactly what each set holds and is the better choice.
We would rather sell fewer boxes to the right people than talk everyone into one.
